The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
