Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
